In the US it is believed that as many as 60 million people are affected by some form of insomnia and 22 million of these may suffer from sleep apnea. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) the root cause of many of these cases is stress and anxiety. Sleep problems often become chronic affecting health more widely and becoming damaging to people’s standard of living.
Many accept this as just part of a modern, hectic lifestyle. However, there is clearly a growing dissatisfaction with the remedies promoted by the pharmaceutical industry. Many of these drugs appear to have harmful side effects and may be addictive. It is, therefore, hardly surprising that there is a growing demand for more effective, natural treatments to help aid our sleeping difficulties.
Vying to meet this demand are a whole host of new cannabis products claiming that they can provide a better alternative. Cannabis, it is argued, can treat the underlying causes of sleep disorders and, by reducing stress and anxiety, give you a better night’s sleep. Moreover, cannabis is a natural product with none of the negative connotations of prescribed medicines.
In a very ‘lightly regulated’ market how can consumers weigh up these bold claims and make an informed decision about these products? Are cannabis wellness products really the risk-free natural remedy for many common maladies, as they claim? To evaluate the many cannabis-infused sleep products suddenly available it is necessary to take a cold, hard look at the basis for their claims and the ingredients they use.
Very basically, there are two distinct types of cannabis plant – marijuana and hemp. This distinction is based on whether a particular strain of cannabis contains the psychoactive element tetrahydrocannabinol, more commonly known as THC, which gives users a ‘high’, euphoric sensation. Marijuana does contain THC, hemp does not. Both marijuana and hemp contain another chemical called CBD. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that CBD may have a number of uses in promoting good health, but it does not affect the mind in the same way as THC and produces none of its characteristic sensations.
In many countries both marijuana and hemp have been illegal, thus preventing CBD from being used in a medicinal context and also making research into its potential uses very difficult. The upshot has been that even now the medical establishment knows surprisingly little about the effects of CBD, leaving the consumer in an information vacuum.
What we do know is that during the period cannabis was criminalised it was not only used for recreational highs. Many cannabis consumers were simply seeking an effective treatment for a whole range of medical conditions. Now that many territories are progressively legalizing cannabis products the distinction between marijuana and hemp has been thrown back into the spotlight. Many places have chosen to remove restrictions on CBD-only products but maintain them on THC. The rationale being that the health benefits of CBD could be released while restricting the recreational appeal of THC.
In many places this has resulted in an explosion of CBD-infused products, such as CBD oils, tinctures, gels, creams and edibles.
Many of these products are aggressively marketed as treatments for a remarkable range of medical conditions. Unfortunately, at this stage there is very little hard science to back up these claims. As yet cannabis products have not been subject to the rigorous scientific testing that pharmaceuticals have gone through. The testing on which these claims are based is usually informal and irregular. Often testing involves low sample sizes, only covering a small subset of the population and fail to respect the standard procedures of medical testing, such as blinds and placebos. Any large scale testing that has taken place has involved animals, usually rats in a laboratory. The consumer is usually presented with a library of anecdotal evidence but, again, this is impossible to verify.
One interesting point that has arisen from this situation is the issue of whether the therapeutic properties of cannabis can be replicated in CBD-only products. While there does appear to be evidence that CBD can be helpful there is also a significant weight of opinion that argues that CBD is most effective when it is used in conjunction with THC, as it would naturally in marijuana.
Many consumers may have concerns over the legal status of THC and worries over the possible effects of THC. Products such as Mota THC/CBD 1:1 Sleep Tincture are designed to assuage such doubts. This sleep tincture contains very low doses of THC but sufficient to ensure that maximum benefit is derived from the CBD.
Sleep tinctures offer a reliable and effective method of delivering cannabis oils. Doses can be carefully regulated and when applied under the tongue are fast-acting. Mota Sleep Tincture is best applied an hour before bedtime.
